Sweden became NATO’s newest member on Thursday, March 7, 2024, when it deposited its instrument of membership to the North Atlantic Treaty with the US Government in Washington, DC. With Sweden’s entrance, NATO currently has 32 members.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated, “This is a historic day.” Sweden will finally assume its proper seat at NATO’s table, having equal input in formulating NATO policies and decisions.
After over 200 years of non-alignment, Sweden finally enjoys Article 5, the ultimate guarantee of the Allies’ freedom and security. Sweden brings formidable military troops and a world-class defence industry.
Sweden’s admission strengthens NATO, makes Sweden safer, and improves overall Alliance security. Today’s entry underscores that NATO’s door remains open and that each country has the right to chart its course.”
Sweden’s flag will be flown alongside the other 31 Allies at a ceremony at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Monday (March 11, 2024), as well as at NATO commands around Europe and North America.
