6th Match 2024 Towards improving Onitsha and revitalising the commercial district. Mr Governor, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo, paid a visit to Niger Street Fegge Onitsha, Onitsha South LGA.

The Governor stated that Onitsha would recover and expressed his desire to make Onitsha better. He advised that the walkways are intended for people trekking, not for companies or parking vehicles anyplace the state government has built roads in Onitsha South LGA.

He warned shopkeepers not to exhibit their wares and goods on or over drainages, as well as on pavements, because offenders would face penalties.

He frowned on the unauthorised construction of structures and stores along the River Niger, advising such developers to desist and directing traders to designated shops in the Market.

Gov Soludo also stated that sand beach miners on the banks of the River Niger are a nuisance because of the way tipper vehicles degrade the road and that limits on their operations will be implemented in the region to prevent damage to government-built roads.

Hon Emeka Orji, Transition Chairman of Onitsha South LGA, stated that many efforts have been taken to curb indiscriminate shop and structure construction along the riverbank because it is not part of the city’s master plan.

He noted that many efforts have been made through meetings with beach miners and tipper drivers to educate them on the importance of properly covering their tippers and not operating with an increased load of sand to prevent sand from dumping on the LGA’s already asphalted roads.

Meanwhile, Mr Governor Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo later inspected ongoing road construction at Silas Works Road by Port Harcourt Road Fegge Onitsha, driving through Ziks Avenue to Silas Works to Port Harcourt Road, where he also warned traders not to do business or display goods on the pavements or risk being penalised.
