Rick Slayman, the trailblazing recipient of the world’s first genetically edited pig kidney transplant, has reached a historic milestone: discharge from the hospital. After a groundbreaking surgery, Slayman, 62, has been released from Massachusetts General Hospital, marking a pivotal moment in medical history.

CNN confirms that Slayman left the hospital’s care on Wednesday, following a successful two-week recovery period post-operation. In a statement issued by the hospital, they expressed optimism about Slayman’s progress, noting his steady recuperation and the decision for him to continue his recovery at home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Reflecting on this momentous occasion, Slayman conveyed his gratitude and joy, remarking, “This moment – leaving the hospital today with one of the cleanest bills of health I’ve had in a long time – is one I wished would come for many years. Now, it’s a reality and one of the happiest moments of my life.”

Slayman’s journey to this point has been one of courage and determination. Faced with end-stage kidney disease last year, he courageously embraced the opportunity presented by his doctors to undergo a pioneering pig kidney transplant, a testament to his unwavering resolve.

The medical team behind Slayman’s surgery has cautiously acknowledged the uncertainties inherent in animal-to-human transplants, emphasizing that while they anticipate the kidney’s longevity, there remain unknown variables to navigate.

This historic surgery marks the third instance of xenotransplantation involving pig organs transplanted into living humans. The first two cases involved heart transplants, undertaken as a last resort under compassionate use provisions. Tragically, both recipients succumbed to complications weeks after their surgeries.

Despite the risks, Slayman’s courage has ignited hope, not only for himself but also for countless others awaiting life-saving transplants. Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received, Slayman emphasized the significance of his surgery for fellow patients, affirming, “Today marks a new beginning not just for me, but for them, as well.”

As the medical community continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, Rick Slayman’s journey serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating a path toward transformative advancements in organ transplantation and the potential for countless lives to be saved in the future.
