Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has responded to a report on his abandonment of a newly constructed multi-billion naira Government House in Umuahia, distancing himself from the facility for the past six months.
Despite assertions that his actions were legal, concerns were raised about the use and abandonment of public properties.
Operating from his personal residence has incurred a monthly cost of about N2 million for fueling state officials’ vehicles traveling to his village for meetings.
Otti justified his decision, citing the poor conditions of both the old and new government complexes, emphasizing the need for substantial funds for their restoration.
He argued that operating from his private residence was a cost-saving measure, prioritizing urgent state needs over personal comfort.
Despite evidence to the contrary, Otti insisted the new Government House was incomplete and hastily commissioned by the previous administration.
Responding to questions about the prolonged use of his private residence, he highlighted competing priorities such as unpaid pensions, civil servants’ salaries, and deteriorating healthcare facilities in the state.
However, Otti remained silent on the financial strain placed on the state government due to his choice of operating outside the state capital.
