On the 30th of December 2023, the ancient kingdom of Nguru Nsukka witnessed a momentous occasion as Chief Asogwa Ifeanyichukwu, a prominent indigene, was conferred with the prestigious traditional chieftaincy title of Agu n’eche ibe 1 by HRH Igwe Linus Nosike Obai, the revered monarch of Nguru Nsukka.

Chief Asogwa, hailing from Nguru Nsukka, expressed profound gratitude for the honour bestowed upon him by his people. In an exclusive interview with the Obinwannem media team, he emphasized the title’s significance, highlighting that it was not obtained through political contest but rather through a nomination process, symbolizing the trust and belief of his community in his worthiness for the position.

As a newly appointed high chief, Chief Asogwa acknowledged the responsibility entrusted to him and his fellow high chiefs to uphold peace and unity within the kingdom. He elucidated their role as representatives of the various villages comprising Nguru Nsukka, emphasizing their duty to assist the king in decision-making processes to foster progress and harmony.

Furthermore, Chief Asogwa shed light on his occupation as a businessman dealing in electrical motor parts in Cotonou, Benin Republic. Despite residing abroad, he proudly emphasized the preservation and promotion of Igbo culture and traditions among diaspora communities. He recounted the vibrant celebration of traditional festivals such as the New Yam Festival and masquerade parades, as well as the unity fostered through associations like the Igbo Union in Benin Republic.

Chief Asogwa’s involvement in his community’s cultural practices extends beyond borders, as evidenced by his prior recognition with the traditional title of Okenwa ana amuru ora 1 within the Igbo Union in Benin Republic. His experiences serve as a testament to the enduring connection between diaspora Igbo communities and their rich cultural heritage.

In conclusion, Chief Asogwa emphasized the intrinsic value of embracing and preserving one’s cultural identity. He refuted claims of tradition being synonymous with evil or fetishism, asserting that these customs are ancestral legacies that foster communal bonds and joyful gatherings. He urged fellow Igbo individuals at home and abroad to cherish and safeguard their cultural heritage, ensuring its perpetuation for generations to come.
