In response to a comment made by Professor Pat Utomi, a chieftain of the Labour Party, regarding the Senate’s decision to halt the planned increase of electricity tariffs, the Senate has issued a statement condemning the remark as misguided and unnecessary. According to the Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Senate, Yemi Adaramodu, the comment by Utomi misinterpreted the Senate’s intentions and unfairly targeted the Senate President, His Excellency, Godswill Akpabio.

The Senate emphasized that its role is to represent the interests of the Nigerian public and address issues that affect the masses. The decision to prevent an increase in electricity tariffs was seen as a measure to alleviate the suffering of the people, especially in the wake of the recent fuel subsidy removal that had already burdened citizens.

The Senate defended its actions as being in the best interest of the nation and the people, showing sensitivity and patriotism towards the struggles faced by the masses. They reiterated that any attempt to impose a tariff increase would only add to the burdens of the Nigerian people and pledged to continue working towards improving the lives of citizens.

In their statement, the Senate expressed disappointment in some political figures who resorted to personal attacks and insults, rather than addressing the substantive issues at hand. They urged these individuals not to politicize matters that directly impact the lives of Nigerians and instead collaborate with all arms of government to tackle the country’s economic challenges.

The Senate concluded by reaffirming their commitment to enact resolutions that support the well-being of the Nigerian people, citing previous efforts to pass “life support resolutions” during their tenure. They implored all stakeholders to focus on constructive dialogue and cooperation to uplift the nation and improve the quality of life for all citizens.

This incident sheds light on the tensions surrounding economic policies and the need for respectful discourse when discussing matters of public interest. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains crucial for all stakeholders to work together to find solutions that benefit the Nigerian masses and propel the nation towards a prosperous future.
