One more European country is now better safeguarded against Russian wickedness. Sweden is joining NATO. Everyone gains when one country’s security improves, allowing that country to truly increase shared security. This norm has repeatedly worked throughout NATO’s history, and I am convinced that it will continue to function.
Right now, in the middle of the Russian attack against everything that has kept Europe calm and together, everyone recognises the need to maintain alliances and partnerships, strengthen one’s security, and care for the security of one’s neighbours.
Sweden is a strong and reliable ally. I applaud everyone in Sweden and throughout the Euro-Atlantic region. Ukraine has always been principled in its support for Sweden’s NATO membership, and I appreciate Sweden’s support for our country. I am certain that Sweden will be able to congratulate Ukraine on its decision to join the Alliance.
