The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made a significant arrest, taking into custody popular cross-dresser Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, widely known as Bobrisky, in Lagos on Wednesday evening. This development was confirmed by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Thursday, April 4.

According to Oyewale, Bobrisky was apprehended for alleged abuse of naira notes, spraying of naira notes, and currency mutilation, among other charges. While emphasizing the seriousness of the EFCC’s mission to uphold the integrity of the Nigerian currency, Oyewale assured that investigations are ongoing and Bobrisky will face prosecution.

Despite Bobrisky’s controversial lifestyle as a cross-dresser, the EFCC clarified that his arrest is solely related to suspected economic crimes and not his personal choices. The EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Command has taken charge of the investigation, which was initiated following a video report depicting Bobrisky spraying and flaunting wads of new naira notes at a movie premiere held on March 24, 2024, in Lekki, Lagos.

Further investigation uncovered similar instances of alleged currency abuse at various events and parties. Bobrisky was summoned by the EFCC and voluntarily presented himself for interrogation at the Lagos Zonal Command on the morning of April 4, 2024. He provided statements to the Commission as part of the ongoing investigation.

The EFCC’s swift action underscores its commitment to combating financial crimes and upholding the sanctity of the Nigerian currency. As the case progresses, Bobrisky’s arrest sends a strong message about the consequences of flouting financial regulations, irrespective of social status or public persona.
