In response to the recent coup in Niger Republic, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken decisive actions by shutting down all Niger borders and imposing wide-ranging sanctions. The Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS has issued a stern seven-day ultimatum to the military in Niger Republic, demanding the restoration of ousted President Muhammed Bazoum to office.

The emergency summit, chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, reached a unanimous decision to appoint and dispatch a Special Representative to convey the demands of the authority to the military in Niger. The summit also unequivocally rejected any purported resignation from the overthrown President Bazoum, demonstrating unwavering support for his reinstatement.

To further exert pressure on the situation, ECOWAS has imposed a ‘no-fly zone’ over Niger and an immediate closure of its borders. These measures are aimed at isolating the coup leaders and sending a strong message that any attempts to disrupt democracy and governance in the region will not be tolerated.

The crisis was triggered by President Mohamed Bazoum’s detention by members of his presidential guards for several days. In an alarming development, the Commander of the country’s Presidential Guards, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, declared himself the Head of a Transitional Government on Friday.

The situation in Niger remains highly tense as the international community closely monitors developments. ECOWAS’ actions demonstrate its commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring stability within the region. As the seven-day ultimatum ticks, the eyes of the world are on Niger Republic to see how the military responds to the demands of the regional bloc.
