Corruption has long been a persistent issue in Nigeria’s political landscape. Over the years, the country has struggled to curb this problem, with instances of alleged corruption involving prominent political figures coming to light. This investigative report sheds light on how corruption seems to be persistently entrenched within Nigerian politics, exemplified by the trajectories of the individuals mentioned.

Background:
In 2006, the then Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, named five governors as “Worst Stealing Governors.” These individuals included Orji Kalu (Abia State), Ahmed Bola Tinubu (Lagos State), Ahmed Sani Yerima (Zamfara State), George Akume (Benue State), and Abudulahi Adamu (Nassarawa State). Fast forward to 2023, the current statuses of these figures paint a concerning picture.

Current Status:

Orji Kalu: Orji Kalu, once named as a “Worst Stealing Governor,” has now transitioned into the political realm as a Senator. This transformation from a governor accused of corruption to a Senator raises questions about the accountability of the Nigerian political system.

Ahmed Bola Tinubu: Ahmed Bola Tinubu, who was listed as one of the “Worst Stealing Governors,” has taken a prominent step into the presidential position. This elevation of Tinubu to the presidency implies a certain level of normalization of his past allegations, which could raise concerns about the message being sent to citizens about corruption and accountability.

Ahmed Sani Yerima: Ahmed Sani Yerima, another name on the list, has also moved into the political realm as a Senator. His trajectory, similar to others, showcases the seeming leniency and normalization of politicians with past corruption allegations.

George Akume: George Akume, previously the governor of Benue State, now serves as a Senator and has been appointed by Tinubu as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). This appointment further raises eyebrows regarding the accountability of the political system.

Abdullah Adamu: Abdullah Adamu, named as a “Worst Stealing Governor,” is the immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This elevation in his political career despite the allegations against him reinforces concerns about accountability.

Institutional Concerns :
The actions taken by those in power seem to indicate a cycle of alleged corruption being rewarded with positions of influence. The fact that individuals with past allegations are now holding significant positions within the government raises questions about the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts and the integrity of the political system.

Conclusion:
The examples presented in this report paint a disheartening picture of the Nigerian political landscape. The elevation of individuals with allegations of corruption into prominent positions raises concerns about the long-term fight against corruption in the country. Nigeria’s struggle with corruption appears to continue, and the institutions responsible for upholding accountability may require further scrutiny and reform to ensure a fair and just governance system for its citizens.\
