The defending champions Liverpool has ended their five-game winless run in the Premier League to step back into the top four, with a 3-1 win to Tottenham Thursday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Reds had never played Tottenham on a Thursday in the Premier league before, and by winning this week’s game, they join Everton and West Ham United as the third club to beat Spurs in the top flight on every day of the week.

Firmino’s effort in first-half stoppage time ended Liverpool’s barren run of 482 minutes without a league goal.

Alexander-Arnold doubled their lead in the 47th minute before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg gave in his first goal for Tottenham a minute later to give the hosts hope.

With Tottenham’s defence unravelling, Mane struck again for Liverpool in the 65th minute and there was no coming back for Mourinho’s side.

Liverpool broke back into the top four with their magnificent win at North London; whereas, the league leaders Manchester City are six points ahead of them with a game in hand.

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp in a statement after the match said: “We scored goals in the right moments, wonderful goals.

“The right people scored the goals. All good, apart from obviously Joel Matip had to go off.

“What I saw today was not about form, it’s… who we are. That’s us. Today, the second half especially, was us. It was a massive fight and football on top of that.

“I don’t know the numbers but I think apart from a few minutes in the first half, I don’t remember them having a lot of the ball. It was always pretty quick and counter-attacking and we defender really well. It was just a good performance and I saw a lot of things I wanted to see.

“Offensively, the way we played, I thought we coped really well with their formation. Played around, played in between, so we were so often in and around the box which is really important. The counter-press was really good. The last line defended really well; high enough but not crazy high.”
