President Bola Tinubu has appointed Musa Aliyu as the fifth substantive chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Mr. Aliyu will take over the leadership of ICPC from Bolaji Owasanoye, a law professor, whose statutory tenure still has over three months remaining.
The presidency has announced that Mr Owasanoye requested to proceed on pre-end of tenure leave, which will commence on November 4, 2023. His tenure is set to expire on February 3, 2024, completing his five-year term.

Mr. Aliyu is a lawyer, having been called to the Nigerian Bar in 2004.
He earned his law degree from Bayero University, Kano, in 2003, and later obtained a Master’s in Law degree (LLM) in Islamic Law from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 2011. He further earned a PhD degree specializing in Constitutional Law from the School of Law Universiti Utara Malaysia in 2019.
He is designated as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and is set to be inaugurated on November 27, 2023.
Hailing from Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State in the North-West, he currently holds the position of Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Jigawa State, a position he was initially appointed to on September 30, 2019, by the former governor and current Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar.
Musa Aliyu has served in various capacities within the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Kano Branch. He was the Vice-Chairman of the NBA Kano Branch in 2016 – 2017 and Chairman of the Human Rights Committee in 2016 – 2017. He also acted as the Secretary of the NBA Continuing Legal Education Committee from 2014 to 2016.
This appointment marks a significant change in the leadership of ICPC, and Mr. Aliyu brings a wealth of legal experience to his new role.
