Obinwannem News Shell: Explosion rocks oil facilities in Bayelsa

Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria and the Nigerian Agip Oil Company around Ikarama in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was said to have experienced massive explosions on Monday.

Michael Adande, the spokesperson for the Shell Petroleum Development Company, confirmed the incident, says the pipeline was about 1 kilometer from the Ikarama community in Bayelsa State.

He also noted that the impacted facility had been shut down to curtail further damage, adding that a government-led joint investigation team will determine the cause of the interference.

Meanwhile, Ben Warder, the youth leader in the community in a complaint said the incident resulted in air pollution from the gas pipeline and crude leak which members of the affected communities are battling to cope with.

He stressed that the residents heard loud sounds from the affected oilfields and were very afraid to go near the impacted area.

However, it was suspected that the blasts may have resulted from attacks on the oil facilities by unknown persons.
