Obinwannem News Amnesty Int'l calls for the release of Man illegally detained for insulting a Governor

Amnesty International has condemned the continuous detention of Mr. Emperor Gabriel Ogbonna who was allegedly accused of insulting Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.

According to Amnesty, Mr. Ogbonna has been kept incommunicado having spent 105 days in detention since he was arrested.

The group condemned his arrest and asked the authorities to heed the court order and release him as soon as possible.

Amnesty made this call in a statement released via their Facebook page as monitored by Obinwannem news.

The statement reads :

“Mr. Emperor Gabriel Ogbonna has been in detention for the past 105 days. He was arrested by the police on 24 March 2020 for allegedly insulting the Abia state governor Okezie Ikpeazu in a social media post.

It is unacceptable that the #DSS is still unlawfully detaining Emperor Ogbonna despite concerns about his health. Ignoring court order by the DSS is a stain on Nigeria’s image.

Amnesty International is calling on the #DSS to comply with a Federal High Court order and immediately release Emperor Gabriel Ogbonna who has been held incommunicado; @muhammadubuhari @profosinbajo @stateabia “
