IGBO CULTURE AND SOCIETY: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF TORTOISE IN IGBO FOLKLORES
The significance of tortoise as a character in Igbo stories cannot be overemphasized. Tortoise, known as “Mbe” in Igbo language, is a popular character in Igbo folklore and has been the focus of many stories and fables. Most Igbo stories have one lead character in common: the reptilian tortoise. An Igbo story that does not involve the tortoise would be remiss. Tortoises are regarded as wise and cunning, and many in the animal kingdom are leery of them. Igbo children, five to six decades ago, knew so much about the tortoise.
Tortoise is often portrayed as a cunning, scheming, and selfish character who is always looking for ways to take advantage of others. In many stories, he is the main antagonist who is always causing trouble for other animals in the forest.
However, despite his negative traits, tortoise is also seen as a wise and intelligent character who possesses a great deal of knowledge and wisdom. He is often able to outsmart his opponents using his wit and resourcefulness.
One of the most well-known stories featuring tortoise is the tale of how he stole the king’s yam. In this story, tortoise tricks the other animals in the forest into giving him their yams so that he can present them to the king as a gift. However, when he arrives at the king’s palace, he claims that the yams were all his own, and he is rewarded with a large portion of land.
This story is often used to teach children about the importance of honesty and the consequences of deceitful behavior. It also highlights the value of intelligence and resourcefulness in achieving one’s goals.
Another popular story featuring tortoise is the tale of how he got his shell. In this story, tortoise is initially a soft and vulnerable creature who is constantly being bullied by the other animals in the forest. However, he eventually comes up with a plan to protect himself by creating a hard shell out of clay.
This story is often used to teach children about the importance of resilience and the value of finding creative solutions to problems. It also highlights the idea that even the smallest and weakest creatures can overcome their challenges and achieve great things.
