Ohanézè Ndigbo’s Silence on Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention: A Concerning Prioritization of Politics over Justice

Ohanézè Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, has historically portrayed itself as the voice of the Igbo people, advocating for their welfare and interests within and beyond the Southeast region of Nigeria. However, recent events have raised questions about the organization’s priorities and commitment to justice. While they have chosen to comment on the Imo State gubernatorial elections and the alleged political witch hunt against Governor Hope Uzodinma, their conspicuous silence on the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a prominent Igbo activist and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is a matter of great concern.

Nnamdi Kanu’s detention by the Nigerian government has been a matter of international concern, with accusations of human rights violations and due process breaches. Many believe that the Nigerian government’s handling of Kanu’s case is a clear violation of his rights and raises questions about the state of justice in the country. Given the gravity of this situation, one would expect Ohanézè Ndigbo to be at the forefront of the calls for his release and the protection of his rights.

Instead, Ohanézè Ndigbo’s recent statement primarily focuses on the Imo State gubernatorial elections and Governor Hope Uzodinma’s political predicament within the All Progressives Congress (APC). While it is important for any organization to be involved in the democratic process and advocate for fairness in elections, it is equally important to prioritize issues of human rights and justice. Nnamdi Kanu’s case transcends politics and is a fundamental matter of justice that should concern any organization claiming to represent the interests of the Igbo people.

The statement also calls upon President Tinubu to exercise his leadership and moral authority by forgiving Governor Uzodinma for his past actions during the Presidential Primaries. While reconciliation within the APC is a political matter, it should not overshadow the more pressing issue of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention. The timing and emphasis on political reconciliation in this statement raise questions about whether Ohanézè Ndigbo is putting political interests above justice and human rights.

Ohanézè Ndigbo’s mission to promote the welfare and interests of the Igbo people must also encompass addressing injustice, victimization, and human rights violations. The organization has a duty to speak out against any form of oppression, regardless of political affiliations. The current silence on Nnamdi Kanu’s detention sends a concerning message that political considerations may be taking precedence over the pursuit of justice.

In conclusion, while Ohanézè Ndigbo’s engagement in the democratic process is essential, their silence on the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, a matter of profound concern to the Igbo community, is disheartening. The organization should refocus its efforts to address the critical issues of justice and human rights, demonstrating their commitment to the welfare of the Igbo people. Politics should not eclipse the pursuit of justice, and it is high time Ohanézè Ndigbo reevaluates its priorities and speaks up for those whose rights are being violated.
