Obinwannem News Ghana's Jerry Rawlings dies at 73

Father of the democratic Ghana and former President Jerry John Rawlings has been reported dead Thursday morning, November 12, 2020.

Report says Rawlings, aged 73, died as a result of COVID-19 complications, about a week of his recent admission at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana; few weeks after he had buried his mother.

Jerry John Rawlings was a retired Ghanaian military officer and politician who led the country from 1981 to 2001 and also for a brief period in 1979.

The former President initially came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d’etat in 1979.

Rawlings, under the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) in 1979, launched a massive ‘anti-corruption’ campaign that purged the nation of ‘corrupt’ political leaders.

He was until his death, the African Union envoy to Somalia.

Amid reports of the Ghanaian (former) leader’s death, Dele Momodu confirmed the development on Twitter, following several Ghanaian news networks that have also confirmed Rawling’s death.
