Bodies of 89 migrants were found in the Atlantic
Mauritania’s coastguards have retrieved 89 migrants’ remains from a capsized boat in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday.
Nine individuals were rescued, including a five-year-old kid, but many more remain missing. According to survivors, the traditional fishing boat set sail last week from the Senegalese-Gambian border area, carrying 170 people. It capsized off Mauritania’s southwestern coast.
Mauritania is a major transit hub for migrants seeking to reach Europe from West Africa, with thousands of boats leaving the nation each year. The most popular destination on the treacherous voyage is Spain’s Canary Islands.
According to the Spanish government, approximately 40,000 people arrived last year, more than doubling the previous year’s total.
Desperate to reach Europe, migrants frequently travel in overcrowded boats. More than 5,000 migrants died while attempting to enter Spain by sea in the first five months of 2024, according to the NGO Caminando Fronteras.
In April, the EU allocated Mauritania €210 million (£177 million; $225 million) in aid, about €60 million of which will be committed on combating unauthorised migration to Europe.

During early trading hours in Seoul, Samsung shares rose by more than 2% in response to the announcement.
The company also claimed a more than 10-fold increase in profits for the first three months of the year. In this quarter, it stated that it expects its earnings to increase to 10.4 trillion won ($7.54 billion; £5.9 billion) from 670 billion won last year. This exceeds analysts’ predictions of 8.8 trillion won, according to LSEG SmartEstimate.

Concern at the news of Orban arranging a trip to Moscow
Other EU leaders have expressed alarm about media suggestions that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban may visit Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday.
Mr Orban, whose country presently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, is the bloc’s only head of national government who has maintained tight connections with the Kremlin following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. European Council President Charles Michel stated that Mr Orban had “no mandate to engage with Russia on behalf of the EU,” while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk requested clarity.
Several media sites reported on Mr Orban’s alleged impending visit, citing various sources. According to the Financial Times, one Hungarian and two EU officials verified media reports that Mr Orban will meet with Russia’s president on Friday.
