Why Was Akwa Okuko’s Shrine in Oba Pulled Down After Court Judgment?
The shrine of Chidozie Nwangwu, known as “Akwa Okuko,” was demolished following his conviction for engaging in ritual practices associated with “Okeite,” a form of money ritual.
In February 2025, Nwangwu was arrested by the Agunechemba Security Outfit on charges including aiding and abetting kidnapping and involvement in money rituals. He was subsequently tried and, in February 2026, pleaded guilty to multiple counts related to these offenses. (thisdaylive.com)
The court sentenced Nwangwu to two years in prison, with the remaining 11 months to be served at the Awka Correctional Centre, considering the 13 months he had already spent in detention. Additionally, the court ordered the demolition of his shrine in Oba, as it was central to the illicit activities.
Operatives from the Agunechemba Security Outfit, supervised by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Ben Emeakayi, carried out the demolition. The shrine, which contained various ritual objects, was dismantled and set ablaze. (punchng.com)
This action underscores the Anambra State Government’s commitment to enforcing laws against ritual-related crimes and practices deemed harmful to public safety. (punchng.com)
