Where is the Justice? A Bold Call for True Igbo Advocacy

One thing has become glaringly clear in the cacophony of voices claiming to fight for the Igbo cause—many are simply fighting to fatten their pockets. This bold declaration from Obinwannem ndi Igbo, a sociocultural organization fiercely dedicated to propagating, protecting, and promoting Igbo welfare, culture, and tradition, has struck a nerve. Their position challenges the pretentious activism of those who wear the Igbo struggle as a badge of convenience while ignoring the cries of true patriots like the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

The Marginalization of a Visionary

Dr Onu’s story is a painful reminder of the injustices Igbo leaders face in the Nigerian political landscape. Despite being a foundational pillar of the All Progressives Congress (APC) alliance, he was sidelined and denied a chance to lead. His poignant question at the APC Congress, “Where is the justice?”, was more than a cry for personal recognition—it was a clarion call for fairness, equity, and respect for the Igbo people.

When the APC turned a deaf ear to his plea, Onu’s disillusionment was palpable. Marginalized, dehumanized, and maltreated, he returned home with a heavy heart. His death only amplifies the tragedy of a system that silences its brightest stars. Yet, in the face of this glaring injustice, many so-called Igbo advocates have remained silent, choosing instead to celebrate superficial achievements.

The Irony of the Ohanaeze Youth Wing’s Appreciation.

The recent press release from the National Youth Leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide exemplifies this irony. It showers gratitude on the same federal and state institutions that have perpetuated the marginalization of Igbo leaders like Onu. It celebrates a “global burial” for the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, an illustrious Igbo son, while ignoring the systemic issues that led to his and Onu’s struggles.

Yes, it is commendable that efforts were made to honor Iwuanyanwu. But where is the same energy when it comes to addressing the injustices faced by Igbo leaders during their lifetimes? The elaborate burial arrangements, the diplomatic accolades, and the public displays of solidarity feel hollow when juxtaposed with the silence surrounding Onu’s marginalization.

The Real Fight for the Igbo Cause

Obinwannem ndi Igbo’s critique reminds us that the true fight for Igbo welfare is not in organizing grandiose burials or issuing flowery statements. It lies in confronting the hard truths—calling out injustices, demanding accountability, and ensuring that every Igbo voice is heard and respected.

Engr. Damian Okafor’s press release reflects the broader issue of misplaced priorities. While it is important to honor our heroes, we must not lose sight of the living struggles that define the Igbo identity. Advocacy should focus on dismantling systems of oppression, uplifting marginalized voices, and securing a future where leaders like Onu do not have to ask, “Where is the justice?”

MA Call for Action

It’s time for Igbo organizations, leaders, and advocates to realign their priorities. Let’s shift the focus from performative gestures to actionable change. Let’s ensure that no Igbo leader feels dehumanized or betrayed by the institutions they helped build.

To those who claim to fight for the Igbo cause, remember this: the struggle is not about enriching your coffers or securing political favours. It’s about justice, equity, and the preservation of our heritage. If your advocacy does not address these core issues, then you are not fighting for the Igbo—you are fighting for yourself.

The legacy of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu demands more than silence. It demands action.
