In what appeared an exchange of fire, about four policemen were gunned down as unknown gunmen reportedly invaded a checkpoint on the outskirts of Calabar, Cross River State capital.

Two police officers were feared dead in the clash. It was also gathered that the hoodlums looted police rifles.

Similarly, on Tuesday night gunmen attacked two checkpoints in the Obubra area of the state killing two policemen and taking away their guns.

A local source attested that six policemen and a solder were killed. But, police spokesperson Irene Igbo said two of their men were gunned down, while a soilder was injured.

It was also confirmed that some soldiers deserted the said gunmen, leaving their bus, and absoconded into the bushes.

“One army who was seriously injured is believed to have died,” the source said.
