UN Chief Calls for Correction of “Historic Injustices” Against Africa
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a passionate plea to African leaders to demand a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, citing “historic injustices” against the continent. Speaking at the China-Africa forum, Guterres emphasized the need for Africa’s representation on the global stage, highlighting the continent’s struggles with debt, limited access to debt relief, and insufficient funding for sustainable development.
“It is outrageous that the continent of Africa still has no permanent seat on the Security Council,” Guterres said, addressing the gathering of over 50 African leaders. “Many African countries are mired in debt and struggling to invest in sustainable development. Many have no access to effective debt relief, scarce resources, and clearly insufficient funding.”
Guterres praised China’s development record, particularly in poverty eradication, and encouraged Africa to leverage China’s expertise in areas like food systems, digital connectivity, trade, and technology. He noted that China’s support can be a catalyst for key transitions on the continent.
“Africa deserves a permanent seat on the Security Council,” Guterres stressed. “It’s time to correct these injustices and ensure Africa’s voice is heard. The continent’s contributions to global peace, security, and development must be recognized and valued.”
The UN chief’s remarks come as the China-Africa forum aims to strengthen ties between the continent and China. Guterres’ call for reform echoes long-standing demands for greater African representation in global governance. African leaders have repeatedly called for a more inclusive and equitable global order, and Guterres’ statement adds weight to their demands.
The forum provides a platform for Africa and China to deepen cooperation and address common challenges. With Guterres’ call for reform, the stage is set for a renewed push for Africa’s rightful place on the global stage.
