Two matches have been cancelled at the Rugby World Cup in Japan, due to the dangers of Typhoon Hagibis.

The two matches are the games between New Zealand and Italy in Toyota, and the game between England and France in Yokohama, both scheduled for Saturday.

Typhoon Hagibis is set to hit Japan this weekend and could be one of the strongest typhoons of the year. No decision has been made yet on the crucial Rugby World Cup matches to be played on Sunday.

Tournament Director, Alan Gilpin, says that decision will only be made on match day.

“The reason for those cancellations, the unprecedented decision for Rugby World Cup, is putting the safety first of the public, teams, officials and tournaments staff and volunteers.

Typhoon Hagibis is heading for Japan and will make landfall on Tokyo is predicted to have very significant and widespread impact, and we feel that making an early decision gives everyone the best chance to make the right decisions for safety. For the matches that are scheduled for Sunday the 13th of October, we’ll be monitoring the impact of the typhoon and on Sunday morning we’ll make an assessment as to whether those matches can take place,” says Gilpin.
