Obinwannem News Trump lends his voice to the growing calls for a COVI19 inquiry

The world’s most powerful man, US President Donald J. Trump gave his support to the over 100 countries seeking a probe into the international handling of the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a tweet on Monday, Trump wrote “We are with them” in response to a news headline about a possible probe pushed by a coalition of 116 countries including 54 African states and the European Union.

Leading the international calls for a probe, Australia had earlier announced it would seek investigation into the origin of the virus, an announcement that drew scrutiny from China, with Beijing warning relationship [with Australia] could be damaged ‘beyond repair’ as a result.

All EU member states and the African Group’s 54 member states will co-sponsor the motion alongside Britain, Russia, Canada Indonesia, Japan, India, New Zealand, South Korea, Brazil, Turkey and Mexico.

Though the draft resolution does not mention China, the calls for impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation of the international response to the pandemic has angered Beijing which has threatened economic sanctions against Australia with five years 80% tariff on barley imports.

President Trump has insisted the “Chinese virus” originated from China, a statement that had drawn sharp criticisms from US Democrats and the media, calling the president’s remarks “racist”

A total of 4,713,611 cases has been detected worldwide with a total of 315,184 confirmed deaths from the Coronavirus.

A vote is expected in the early hours of Tuesday.
