Trump, 78, made his choice on the first day of the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee, a spectacle heightened by the former president’s attempted assassination. Vance, 39, is seen as the standard-bearer for a new type of populism that has emerged under Trump. He supports the ex-president’s isolationist, anti-immigrant America First ideology.

One of the least experienced vice presidential nominees in recent history, the one-term senator is more conservative than the former president on numerous topics, including abortion, where he supports calls for federal law. He rose to prominence with the 2016 memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” a best-selling chronicle of his Appalachian family and modest Rust Belt background that gave voice to rural, working-class angst in a left-behind America.

Critics have referred to other embarrassing remarks made by former “Never Trump guy” Vance in the past, including labelling the billionaire a “idiot,” “noxious,” and “reprehensible,” as well as implying he was “America’s Hitler.” Vance rebuilt himself as a Trump loyalist in recent years, eventually receiving the ex-president’s vital endorsement in the 2022 Ohio Senate race.
