Tragedy Strikes Delta State: Two-Storey Building Under Construction Collapses, Workers Trapped

A devastating incident has occurred in Okpanam community, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, as a two-storey building under construction collapsed on Saturday, September 14, 2024. The catastrophic event trapped several workers, leaving many feared injured or worse.

Eyewitnesses reported that the building, situated opposite Asaba Airport and adjacent to a Nigerian Police Station (former SARs), gave way following a heavy downpour that battered the area. The collapse sparked widespread panic among residents, with many rushing to the scene to assist in rescue efforts.

According to Unor, one of the workers who narrowly escaped the disaster, several colleagues were severely injured while attempting to jump from the second floor to safety. “Some of us were able to escape unhurt, but many others were injured while trying to get out,” Unor said. “Those who were hurt have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.”

Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency services and local authorities working tirelessly to locate and free those still trapped beneath the rubble. The exact number of casualties remains unknown, but witnesses estimate that several workers may still be trapped.

The incident has raised concerns about the structural integrity of buildings under construction in the state. “This is a wake-up call for the government and construction companies to ensure that buildings are constructed with safety in mind,” said a local resident.

State Commissioner for Housing, God knows Agele, has yet to comment on the incident, despite repeated attempts to reach him.

The Delta State Government has issued a statement expressing condolences to the families of the affected workers. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse,” the statement read.

Locals have rallied around the affected families, offering support and assistance. “We are doing everything we can to help those affected,” said a community leader. “This is a difficult time for our community, but we will come together to support one another.”

The cause of the collapse is currently unknown, but authorities have launched an investigation to determine the factors contributing to the disaster.
