Tinubu’s Nigeria to Celebrate 64th Independence Day with Low-Key Events Amidst Economic Challenges
Nigeria is set to mark its 64th independence anniversary with a low-key celebration, a decision made in light of the country’s current economic challenges. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, announced this decision, stating that no world leaders have been invited to the celebration. This year’s theme is “Nigeria @ 64, Renewed Hope for Unity and Prosperity”.
The government acknowledges the economic hardship faced by Nigerians and is working to provide necessary palliatives. Despite the challenges, President Tinubu’s administration remains determined to build a better future for Nigeria. The low-key celebration is a reflection of the government’s awareness of the economic realities on the ground.
According to Akume, the event will provide an opportunity for the government to showcase its achievements and reform initiatives aimed at delivering the dividends of democracy. “The 64th Independence Anniversary celebration will be low-keyed to reflect the trying times the nation is undergoing,” he stated.
The celebration schedule includes:
A World Press Conference on September 26, where the government will address the media and outline its plans for the future.
A Juma’at Service on September 27, to seek divine guidance and blessings for the nation. A Church Service on September 29, to promote unity and patriotism among Nigerians.
A Presidential Broadcast and Independence Day Parade on October 1, where President Tinubu will address the nation and showcase the country’s military might. An inter-ministerial committee, comprising key officials from various ministries and security agencies, will plan and execute all approved events. The committee’s tasks include:
Planning and executing all approved events.
Co-opting relevant organizations for support.
Documenting events for posterity.
Completing any additional assignments necessary for a successful celebration.
The committee members include the Ministers of Budget and Economic Planning, Information and National Orientation, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and the Federal Capital Territory, along with the Inspector-General of Police and other security representatives.
