The Chicken Parable of Adolf Hitler

One day, Hitler walked into a cabinet meeting with a live chicken tucked under his arm, gripping its head firmly. As he moved toward his seat, he started yanking out its feathers one by one. The bird shrieked in pain, flapping and twisting wildly to break free, but Hitler ignored its suffering and kept stripping it bare.

Several ministers protested: “Stop tormenting that poor animal—set it free!”

Hitler paid no attention and continued until every last feather was gone. Then he tossed the naked, trembling chicken onto the floor. Reaching into his pocket, he scattered a few grains of feed in front of it.

Starving and desperate, the chicken hesitated only briefly before inching closer to Hitler’s hand and pecking at the scraps. Soon it was right beside him, calmly eating—the very same creature that had fought so desperately to escape moments earlier, now content for a mere handful of food.

His astonished colleagues asked, “What does this mean?”

Hitler replied coolly: “This is exactly how voters behave. We spend four and a half years tearing them apart and taking everything from them. Then, in the final six months before the election, we toss them a few crumbs. For those tiny handouts, they quickly forget every hardship and wrong we inflicted—and happily vote for us again.”

This parable (often circulated with slight variations in timing or attributed to Hitler, Stalin, or other figures) is almost certainly apocryphal, but the metaphor remains sharp and widely shared in political commentary.
