Symptoms of Glaucoma that Should Not Be Ignored To Avoid Blindness

Obinwannem News Symptoms of Glaucoma that Should Not Be Ignored To Avoid Blindness

Glaucoma is an eye disease that can damage your optic nerve. The optic nerve supplies visual information to your brain from your eyes.

Glaucoma is usually, but not always, the result of abnormally high pressure inside your eye. Over time, the increased pressure can erode your optic nerve tissue, which may lead to vision loss or even blindness. If it’s caught early, you may be able to prevent additional vision loss.

Glaucoma Causes

The fluid inside your eye, called aqueous humor, usually flows out of your eye through a mesh-like channel. If this channel gets blocked, or the eye is producing too much fluid, the liquid builds up. Sometimes, experts don’t know what causes this blockage. But it can be inherited, meaning it’s passed from parents to children.

The symptoms of Glaucoma

  1. Severe eye pain
  2. Nausea
  3. Vomiting
  4. Redness in your eye
  5. Sudden vision disturbances
  6. Seeing colored rings around lights
  7. Sudden blurred vision

Types of glaucoma

1. Open-angle glaucoma
Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of the disease. The drainage angle formed by the cornea and iris remains open, but the trabecular meshwork is partially blocked. This causes pressure in the eye to gradually increase. This pressure damages the optic nerve.

2. Angle-closure glaucoma
Angle-closure glaucoma, also called closed-angle glaucoma, occurs when the iris bulges forward to narrow or block the drainage angle formed by the cornea and iris. As a result, fluid can’t circulate through the eye and pressure increases.

Risk factors of glaucoma

  1. People over age 40
  2. Have a family history of glaucoma
  3. Have poor vision
  4. Have diabetes
  5. Take certain steroid medications such as prednisone
  6. Are nearsighted or farsighted
  7. Have had an injury to your eye or eyes
  8. Have high eye pressure

Note:
It is very important to visit the doctor if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above for quick medical attention.
