Rivers State Governor Suspends Akuku-Toru LG Caretaker Chairman
Port Harcourt, Rivers State – In a surprise move, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has suspended the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, Hon. Otonye Briggs.
A source in Government House, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Briggs’ suspension was with immediate effect. The source further revealed that Hon. Bitebobo Nelson Amieye has been appointed to take over the affairs of the council.
Governor Fubara has directed Briggs to hand over all council properties in his possession to the new CTC chairman. However, the state government has not officially disclosed the reasons for Briggs’ suspension.
Sources close to the government claimed that Briggs’ failure to empower residents of his LGA, as directed by the governor, led to his suspension. Fubara had ordered all CTC chairmen and their committee members to initiate empowerment programs for their supporters in all LGAs.
While other chairmen have reportedly complied with the directive, Akuku-Toru LGA has failed to implement the program. This apparent lack of compliance is believed to have led to Briggs’ suspension.
The governor’s empowerment program aims to boost economic activities and provide support to residents across the state. The program’s success is seen as crucial to Fubara’s administration, and any failure to implement it may be viewed as a setback.
Briggs’ suspension has sparked speculation about potential underlying reasons. Some observers suggest that the move may be linked to internal politics within the state’s ruling party.
The sudden replacement has also raised questions about the future of Akuku-Toru LGA under Amieye’s leadership. As the new CTC chairman, Amieye is expected to prioritize the empowerment program and address any outstanding issues.
The development has generated mixed reactions from stakeholders and residents of Akuku-Toru LGA. While some have welcomed the change, others have expressed concerns about the potential impact on the council’s operations.
Governor Fubara’s administration has been focused on promoting economic growth and development in Rivers State. The empowerment program is a key component of this strategy, and any setbacks may hinder progress.
As the situation unfolds, attention will be focused on Amieye’s ability to deliver on the governor’s empowerment program and address any challenges facing Akuku-Toru LGA.
