Relief on the Horizon: Floodwaters Recede in Maiduguri as Normalcy Slowly Returns

In what comes as a glimmer of hope for the flood-ravaged city of Maiduguri, flood levels have finally begun to recede, signalling the slow but sure return of normalcy to the area. For weeks, the residents battled the relentless rise of water, but now, they are starting to see the first signs of recovery.

The Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, shared this promising development while emphasizing that the agency’s work is far from over. “Though our work is far from being done and our round-the-clock emergency response, monitoring, and assessment continues, it’s important to provide some updates,” she stated.

She added, “The relieving observation is that the flood level in Maiduguri is receding, and normalcy is beginning to return to the metropolis.”

The state government has taken swift action, providing shelter to flood victims in eight relief camps scattered across the state, and offering respite to those whose homes have been submerged.

In a proactive effort to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases, NEMA has deployed three water purification trucks to Maiduguri. The agency has also partnered with chemical companies to purify household water, ensuring residents have access to clean, safe water.

As the floodwaters slowly retreat, the city can finally start to breathe again, but the road to full recovery is still ahead. NEMA’s teams remain on high alert, committed to monitoring and responding to any further developments.
