President Tinubu Approves N108 Billion Disaster Relief Fund for States as Borno Battles Severe Flooding

In a bold move to combat the rising threat of natural disasters across Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a substantial N108 billion fund to assist states in addressing emergency crises. Each state will receive N3 billion to support their efforts in mitigating the effects of these disasters.

Borno State, one of the hardest hit by recent flooding, is already feeling the impact of this federal support. Governor Babagana Umara Zulum announced yesterday that Borno had received its N3 billion allocation from the Federal Government, just in time to tackle the devastating floods caused by the failure of the Alau Dam water channels.

With the state’s capital struggling under the weight of the humanitarian crisis, the funds offer a critical lifeline. Governor Zulum emphasized the significance of this timely support, noting that financial aid will be crucial in providing relief to those displaced by the floods and rebuilding the damaged infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima, affirming the President’s commitment, addressed lawmakers and underscored Tinubu’s dedication to assisting the states. “The President has shown his zeal, willingness, and commitment to partner with the states towards addressing these issues. Recently, he approved the release of N3 billion to each state of the federation to address some of these challenges so that all parts of the federation should have buy-in and belonging.”

As Nigeria faces increasingly frequent natural disasters, the federal government’s decisive action sets a strong precedent for disaster management and the importance of state-federal collaboration in times of crisis. The N108 billion disaster relief fund represents not only a practical solution to immediate challenges but also a step toward long-term resilience in the face of climate change and environmental disasters.
