TWO SUSPECTED INTERSTATE KIDNAPPERS AND ARMED ROBBERS ARRESTED BY POLICE AND NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH OPERATIVES IN OBOLLO-AFOR, UDENU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ENUGU STATE

Residents of Obollo-Afor in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State woke to news of relief on Monday, May 18, 2026, as the Enugu State Police Command announced the arrest of two suspected members of an interstate kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate that had allegedly been terrorising border communities between Enugu and Benue states.

The arrest, which took place on Wednesday, May 14, 2026, at approximately 1:20 p.m. at Amutenyi in Obollo-Afor, was made possible through a joint operation between operatives of the Udenu Police Division and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, whose intelligence and vigilance proved decisive in neutralising the threat.

The suspects were identified as Mohammed Hassan, male, aged 28, and Aminu Usman, male, aged 26, both natives of Otukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State. Their arrest followed sustained intelligence-led surveillance of criminal activity in communities along the Enugu-Benue border corridor, an area that has become increasingly vulnerable to motorcycle snatching, kidnapping for ransom, and armed attacks on commuters and farmers.

Preliminary investigations by the Command confirmed that the two men are members of a larger criminal network operating across state boundaries. Items recovered from the suspects during their arrest paint a chilling picture of operational criminal capacity.

According to the statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Enugu State Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, on Monday May 18, 2026, the following items were recovered: one Beretta pistol loaded with two rounds of 9mm live ammunition, three suspected stolen motorcycles, one mobile phone, suspected charms, one ATM card, a bunch of keys, and the sum of N4,700 in cash.

The presence of a loaded firearm, multiple stolen motorcycles and suspected charms in their possession underscored the scale of criminal operations the syndicate had allegedly been conducting before the arrest. SP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed in the official statement that efforts were already ongoing to track down and apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate and that the two suspects in custody would be formally arraigned upon the conclusion of investigations.

The statement further noted that preliminary investigation indicates the suspects were specifically involved in kidnapping operations and motorcycle snatching along the border communities between Enugu and Benue states, two activities that have caused significant economic and psychological damage to communities in that corridor over recent months.

Responding to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to rid the state of criminal elements. He stated that the Command would not relent in its efforts to combat violent crimes across the state, praising the collaboration between the Udenu Police Division and
the Neighbourhood Watch Group as a model of community-police partnership that other divisions should replicate.

His words reflect a broader security strategy that the Enugu State Police Command has been pursuing in 2026, emphasising grassroots intelligence gathering and community involvement as essential tools in combating interstate criminal syndicates.

The Obollo-Afor axis of Udenu Local Government Area has in recent years been identified as a vulnerable flashpoint for criminal activity, given its proximity to the Benue State border and its position along a major commercial and transportation route. The arrest of Mohammed Hassan and Aminu Usman represents a significant operational success for the security architecture of the area, but community leaders and residents have continued to call for a permanent security presence along the corridor to prevent criminal networks from regrouping.

As the investigation continues, the eyes of Obollo-Afor residents remain firmly on the Command, waiting to see whether the other members of the syndicate still at large will be brought to justice.
