Good Friday — short stories and meanings

What it commemorates

Good Friday marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is observed during Holy Week on the Friday before Easter Sunday.

Biblical accounts: The event is described in the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). Key moments include Jesus’ trial, the carrying of the cross, the crucifixion between two criminals, the darkness over the land, and Jesus’ final words before his death.

Theological significance: Many Christians see Good Friday as the day of atonement and ultimate sacrifice—Jesus’ death is understood as reconciling humanity with God, taking on sin so believers may receive forgiveness and new life.

Stories and reflections Christians tell

  • The Suffering Servant imagery from Isaiah is often read as a prophetic link.

  • The story of the repentant thief crucified beside Jesus emphasizes mercy and immediate forgiveness.

  • The tearing of the temple curtain (symbolically ending separation between God and people) is a common sermon theme.

  • Personal devotionals focus on the cross as both an act of suffering and a sign of hope.

Traditions and observances around the world

  • Silent or somber services, often with readings of the Passion.

  • Stations of the Cross processions reenacting Jesus’ path to Calvary.

  • Fasting, prayer, and quiet reflection.

  • In some cultures, dramatic passion plays or public processions recreate the events of the day.
