Ohanaeze Draws the Line: No More “Eze” Titles Outside Igboland

Chijioke Mbanefo, Obinwannem News | Enugu Bureau | April 22, 2026

There is something almost poetic about the fact that an organisation whose name means “the meeting of Igbo elders” had to hold an emergency meeting to tell Igbo people to stop appointing kings. But that is exactly what happened in Enugu this month.

Senator John Azuta-Mbata, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, declared the conferment of “Eze Ndigbo” titles outside Igboland invalid, warning that sanctions would be imposed on violators. He stated that the National Executive Council, together with the South East Council of Traditional Rulers, had resolved to end the practice entirely.

The declaration was firm, but what gave it teeth was the voice beside it. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Lady Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, warned of a growing cultural crisis among Igbo communities in the diaspora, saying it threatens identity and social cohesion across countries, including Ghana, South Africa, and beyond.

The widow of General Odumegwu Ojukwu — a name that carries the weight of Igbo sacrifice — stood before that gathering and said enough. The Igbo people built civilisations before the British arrived and renamed our governance structures. Our title systems were never designed for export as social currency. An Eze without land, lineage, or the blessing of the community’s ancestors is not an Eze.

He is a costume. The harder work now is ensuring our diaspora communities hear the distinction not as a rebuke, but as a restoration — of the genuine thing.
