ONITSHA, Anambra State—Fire Outbreak

A devastating fire ripped through a section of the Onitsha Main Market early this morning, March 28, 2025, leaving traders in shock and counting losses estimated in billions of Naira.

The inferno, which began at approximately 6:20 AM, originated from a building on Ifejika Street, near Sokoto Road, and rapidly spread, engulfing adjacent structures. The sudden outbreak sent waves of panic through the bustling market, as traders and residents scrambled to salvage what they could.

“The Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call at 6:20 AM, and our firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene,” confirmed Chukwudi Chiketa, Head of Media and Publicity for the Anambra State Fire Service. “We are working diligently to contain the situation and prevent further spread.”

Despite the swift response from the fire service, assisted by concerned residents and passersby, the fire caused extensive damage, destroying countless shops and goods. Eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture of billowing smoke and desperate attempts to rescue merchandise.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a recent fire at Iweka Road, near Ochanja market, raising serious concerns about the frequency of such outbreaks and the adequacy of fire safety measures in the area.

“This is a terrible blow to our community,” lamented one trader, who wished to remain anonymous. “Many of us have lost everything. We are pleading with the government to provide assistance.”

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Authorities have yet to ascertain the full extent of the damage. The police commisioner of Anambra state has also made statements of sympathy to those who have lost their goods.
