No Man Wants Me, I Don’t Know If I’ll Get Married: Actress Joan Johnson Opens Up About Her Turbulent Past, Struggles with Love, and Rise to Stardom
In an exclusive interview with Saturday Vanguard, fast-rising actress Joan Johnson shared her touching story of overcoming adversity, rising to stardom, and navigating the challenges of love and relationships.
Johnson, who lost her parents at the tender age of 7, was forced to live in different homes as a house help, where she faced unimaginable hardships, including sexual harassment from the husbands. She also experienced sexual harassment from her uncle, which she kept hidden, hoping to use her life story as a movie in the future.
Despite the challenges, Johnson pursued her passion for acting, starting out as a child actor at 13. She worked multiple jobs, including as a bar attendant and sales representative, to make ends meet while auditioning for roles. Her determination and resilience paid off when she landed a role in the movie “Emergency,” which focused on the plight of the Chibok Girls.
However, her dream of travelling abroad was shattered when a friend duped her of N4.7 million, claiming to help her process travel documents. The friend also attempted to push her into becoming a stripper in Kenya, a devastating experience that left her bankrupt and homeless.
Johnson eventually returned to acting in 2022 and has since worked on various productions, earning recognition as a promising star. She has produced her own short movies and acted alongside top Nollywood actors, solidifying her position in the entertainment industry.
Off-screen, Johnson describes herself as a “crazy kind of girl” and a responsible person. She prioritizes her career over relationships, having been hurt in love before. Despite her past experiences, she remains open to love but emphasizes that men do not appreciate her.
“I wash, cook, and clean my man’s apartment just to make him feel like a king. But what I get in return is scorn,” she lamented. “No man has ever appreciated me apart from my father and my ex-boyfriend, who was worshipping the ground I walked on.”
When asked about her prospects for marriage, Johnson expressed uncertainty. “I don’t even know if I’m going to get married. No man wants me,” she said, highlighting the struggles she faces in finding meaningful relationships.
Johnson’s story serves as a testament to her resilience and determination to succeed in the entertainment industry. Her experiences have taught her to be cautious and independent, but she remains hopeful that she will find true love and appreciation in the future.
