Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Resumes with New Judge, Accelerated Hearing Scheduled
Abuja, Nigeria The long-standing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken a significant turn, with the case reassigned to a new judge and a schedule set for accelerated hearings.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja is now presiding over the matter, following Justice Binta Nyako’s recusal at Kanu’s request. The development marks a fresh chapter in the legal saga, which has been marked by numerous delays and legal maneuvers. Notably, Kanu has also engaged a new lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), a former Attorney-General of the Federation, signaling a strategic shift in his defense.
During the recent court proceedings, Kanu, through his new counsel, tendered an apology for his previous outbursts towards Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecution team, and his former legal team. This apology was accompanied by a plea of not guilty to the revised seven-count charge of terrorism and treasonable felony brought against him by the Federal Government.
Justice Omotosho, acknowledging the prolonged nature of the trial and its potential impact on Kanu, has scheduled the case for an accelerated hearing. The court has set the following dates for the continuation of the trial: April 29, May 2, and May 6, 2025.
“The court is aware of the length of this trial and its effect on the defendant.” Justice Omotosho stated, emphasizing the need for expediency.
