Nigeria’s #ENDSARS protest goes global

Following the ongoing uprising, in several parts of Nigeria, which ostensibly has ‘lamed’ the anti-police brutality protest in the country; thousands of Nigerians living abroad are protesting in their various countries of resident, today. Pictures made available to Obinwannem News had confirmed.

According to reports, protests are ongoing in countries like Japan, Kassel in Germany, New York in USA, London in the United Kingdom, et cetera; against police violence, and by extension, bad governance in Nigeria.

The protesters are demanding immediate ‘disbandment’ of the tactical police unit known as SARS [Special Anti Robbery Squad], reformation of the police, among others; due to the persistent outcries of police brutality rocking the country for years now.

Recall that after days of widespread demonstrations, the authorities announced that SARS would be disbanded, and replaced by a Special Weapons and Tactics [SWAT] team.

The announcements have not satisfied the protesters, who see the changes as nothing but a renaming exercise.

In a bid to ‘quell’ the protests, the Buhari-led government had earlier ordered a military exercise codenamed ”Operation Crocodile Smile” to be launcjed on October 20, 2020, across the country; which reportedly led to a mass shooting of peaceful, unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate, Lagos.

The death toll in the region of 50 has sparked outrage across the world with many prominent people ad word leaders coming out to condemn the shooting as evil and undemocratic.

The International Human Rights watchdog, Amnesty International has said not less than 10 protesters were killed by the army, and police at the Lekki toll gate; and a total of 56 persons have died since the demonstrations began, few weeks ago.
