Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, died Friday in a plane crash, on an official visit to the northern state of Kaduna, which had recorded a streak of security challenges in recent times.

The air force said it was investigating the cause of the plane crash, which transpired near Kaduna airport.

“The immediate cause of the crash is still being ascertained,” Air Force spokesman Edward Gabkwet announced.

The presidency stated that the army general, his wife Mrs. Fati Attahiru, and other military officers died in the crash.

“All of them are heroes who paid ultimate price for peace and security in the land,” Buhari tweeted. “Attahiru’s demise was in an air crash while on an official trip to Kaduna State”.

Obinwannem News had reported a similar crash –Seven feared dead as Nigerian military jet crashes in Abuja– three months ago, following a reported engine failure.

Attahiru was appointed by the presidency; alongside other military chiefs in January, after years of mounting criticism regarding the relentless activities of Boko Haram, and armed gangs.
