Obinwannem News Nigerians escapes to Benin Republic over Herdsmen attacks

Following the series of deadly attack perpetuated by Fulani herdsmen in Ogun West senatorial districts, residents have escape to Benin Republic to seek solace and to ensure that are safe.

Clashes between the affected residents of Agbon-Ojodu, Asa, Iselu, Ijale, Owode-ketu, Oja Odan and Orile Igboro farmers claimed the lives of more than thirteen people due to dastardly act of the Fulani herdsmen.

Saturday Vanguard visited some of the affected villages, and noticed that the resident had deserted their communities for fear of another attack.

Asa village witnessed a terrible attack from the Fulani herdsmen, as the villagers lamented their woes.

Speaking to Vanguard, the traditional ruler of Asa village, the Adele of Asa, Chief Matthew Akande Olukoku confirmed that many residents and the adjourning villages had relocated to Egelu, Owode, Iganna, gbokoto and pobe all in the Benin Republic.

He, however said, his people had to seek protection in neighboring Benin Republic, following series of attacks by the Fulani herdsmen which led to the deaths of many people.

Chief Olukoku said, the herders raided the communities shooting, killing people and destroying properties worth millions of naira, stool their belongings and looted shops.

“Our shops were broken, many houses, motorcycles, and vehicles were destroyed. So, since there is nothing left for them to live on and their security was not guaranteed, they had to leave to where they believed that they would be safe.

“How on earth can someone derive joy in destroying other peoples means of livelihood just to sustain his own ‘business’, and we say we have a government and that we belong to the same country? President Muhammed Buhari should stop herders from coming to our communities, while the Ogun state Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun should do the needful to protecting his people,” he appealed.

In addition, he said both the State, and the federal
government should adequately compensate all those whose property and means of livelihood were destroyed during the attack to enable them bounce back to their normal lives.
