Nigeria Labour Congress Accuses Tinubu’s Administration of Betrayal Over Fuel Price Hike, Demands Immediate Reversal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the President Bola Tinubu-led administration for increasing the fuel pump price, accusing it of betraying the terms and conditions of the N70,000 new minimum wage agreement. The union expressed its deep sense of betrayal, stating that the increase in fuel price was a violation of the understanding that the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS) would not be increased.

In a statement signed by NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, the union recalled that it accepted the N70,000 minimum wage despite knowing it was insufficient, based on the assurance that the fuel price would remain stable. However, barely a month after the agreement, the government has increased the pump price, causing “traumatic and nightmarish” consequences for Nigerians.

The NLC described the development as a “betrayer’s move” and regretted that President Tinubu’s administration has consistently shown a character of betrayal. The union cited instances such as the assurances given by the National Assembly leadership on the 250% tariff hike, which were later reneged on.

The NLC demands an immediate reversal of the fuel price hike and urges the government to commence payment of the new national minimum wage. It also warns that the union will not accept further punishment of Nigerians and will take necessary action to protect their interests.

The union’s statement comes after filling stations owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) increased petrol price to over N850 per litre across the country, in compliance with a directive given by the NNPC management. This move has sparked widespread outrage and concern among Nigerians, who are already struggling with the economic hardship.
