NDC Plants Where ADC Hesitates

This is POEM. We report. We analyse. We project.

The National Democratic Congress, NDC, held a successful convention on Saturday, May 9. It affirmed that its 2027 presidential ticket is zoned to Southern Nigeria. The party went further, stating that the flag bearer would serve a single four-year term, with the ticket rotating to the North in 2031.

One reason the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has faced defections is its insistence on no zoning. H.E. Atiku Abubakar, widely seen as the party’s likely flag bearer, has not indicated willingness to cede the ticket to Southern Nigeria. This stands in contrast to the understanding that the South is expected to hold the presidency until 2031. Atiku’s poor history with zoning arrangements is well documented in Nigeria’s political record.

The NDC moved where the ADC hesitated, giving Nigerians the clarity they sought. The shift reflects a broader trend in Nigeria’s political evolution: policy positions must align with public mood, psychology, and the collective yearning for stability. Many Nigerians view power rotation not merely as an arrangement, but as a stabilising moral contract essential for national balance.

Political philosophers and social contract theorists, from Jean-Jacques Rousseau to John Locke argued that legitimacy derives from an unwritten social contract between rulers and the ruled. When that contract appears breached, trust erodes quietly before resistance grows loudly. In multifaceted societies, stability depends not only on constitutions but on political understanding, inclusion, and a sense of fairness among competing blocs.

Even Niccolò Machiavelli, often cast as the apostle of ruthless politics, warned leaders against ignoring the temper of the people. Power may be acquired through strategy, but durability rests on public perception and acceptance. Where citizens feel excluded from the political rhythm, resentment becomes fertile ground for opposition.

While the ADC was busy gloating about having experienced hands and formidable structures, the NDC read the national mood faster and responded with greater clarity. In politics, timing is often as decisive as ideology. Parties that misread the electorate’s emotional direction risk sounding technically correct while becoming electorally disconnected.

Nigeria remains a delicate federation held together not only by law, but by continuous negotiation of trust, identity, and equity. Any platform seeking national acceptance in 2027 must understand one reality: where justice is seen to rotate, hope rotates with it.

Within a short time of welcoming Mr. Peter Obi and HE Rabiu Kwankwaso into her fold, the NDC demonstrated a willingness to accommodate a progressive coalition as well as aligning with the general wishes for a new Nigeria.

Indeed, NDC is OK and a new Nigeria, quite POssible.
