Mazi Ugwu Okechukwu Speaks: Why the Bishop’s Omission of Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah Shouldn’t Spark All This Drama

My brothers and sisters, it is a good thing to appreciate and honour people who contribute to the development of our community and our places of worship. But we must always be clear about the real reason behind our actions, is it done from a genuine heart, or is it mainly for recognition and applause?

To those who are angry with the bishop for not calling the senator’s name: Please let us ask ourselves honestly, did Senator Ifeanyi Ubah invest so heavily in building that cathedral just so his name would be mentioned publicly, or carved on a plaque for everyone to see? Was that the main purpose of his generosity?

Secondly, was the omission deliberate or just a simple oversight? If it was an honest mistake and not intentional, then there is really no need to keep dragging the matter or turning it into a big fight. The bishop can still acknowledge him properly tomorrow, next week, or any other time. It is never too late to give credit where it is due.

The most important truth remains: Everyone, including me, knows very well that Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah played a major role in providing the resources that helped build that cathedral. That fact is not hidden from anyone, and no one can change it.

So why are so many people so upset and crying that he was not publicly mentioned? Will a public shout-out increase the blessings he has already received from God because of his generosity? Or will the lack of mention reduce those blessings in any way?

This whole situation tells us something serious about how many people approach giving and philanthropy in Nigeria today. Too often, the motive is not pure kindness, but the desire for praise, fame, or social media attention. But Senator Ifeanyi Ubah was different, he was a truly generous man who gave from the heart. Whether his name is called out or not does not change the kind of person he was, and it does not take anything away from his good works.

I am very sure that even if Senator Ubah were still alive and present at that event, he would not have been bothered or offended by the omission. He knew the truth, and the truth stands on its own.

That said, Bishop, please in the future, make it a point to openly recognise and appreciate those who have supported and sacrificed for the church. It encourages more people to give willingly and builds unity in the body of Christ.

Let us focus on what truly matters — sincere service to God and to one another. Rest in peace, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Your legacy speaks for itself. 🙏
