Guardiola, 49, who has been back home in Barcelona Spain since the global pandemic interrupted the Premier League season lost her mother Dolors Sala Carrió to the novel virus COVID19. She was 82 years old.

Pep has been at the forefront in the fight against the coronavirus having donated € 1 million to the relief fund in Spain.

He also issued a video as part of the club’s Cityzens At Home initiative urging everyone to stay home and follow the advice of the medical experts in the field.

The Spaniard’s employer, Manchester city confirmed the news in a tweet. “The Manchester City family are devastated to report the death today of Pep’s mother Dolors Sala Carrió in Manresa, Barcelona after contracting coronavirus. She was 82 years old.

“Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.”

City Chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, also sent out a heartwarming tweet. “Our prayers and heartfelt sympathies are with Pep and his family at this overwhelmingly sad time. He and they have the love and support of the entire City family.”

City rival club Manchester United and other Premier League clubs have also sent out condolences messages in support of Guardiola.
