Sunday was another frustrating day for Mike Arteta’s men, as they were defeated by Premier League defenders. Gunners were looking for a desperate redemption, after suffering a humiliating defeat against newly promoted Brentford in their opening match. Chelsea were also looking to multiply their wins at Emirates Stadium.
The Blues Head coach, Thomas Tuchel spent some money to strengthen his squad before the new season, bringing key players like Romelu Lukaku to the team.
Arsenal pushed really early in the match, when Smith Rowe capitalized on a knock down from Saka, firing the ball straight at Mendy. Tuchel’s men countered immediately, but, Alonso’s shot was denied by Xhaka. Breakthrough came for Chelsea in the 15th minute, when Lukaku warded off Mari, as Kovacic passed on to James who provided a brilliant cross into the six yards for Lukaku to send it home.
Chelsea threatened more in the later stages of the first half, placing a shot which was blocked by Arsenal’s Holding. Pablo Mari had the first booking, after a rough sliding tackle on Lukaku. Arsenal couldn’t regroup in time, giving their opponents another goal in the 35th minute. Mason Mount found James Reece in a swift move, who in turn produced a fine strike to give the visitors a comfortable lead.
Gunners tried to get back in the game, when Saka saw a 52nd minute deflected strike saved by Mendy. Aubemeyang replaced Saka, with an effort on target, which was also saved by Mendy. The Blues dominated the match and made more attempts on goal.
Chelsea secured all three points at the Emirate stadium, with a full-time 2-0 lead. Thomas Tuchel’s men are currently at the top of the table, with two wins from two matches, while Gunners are in the bottom three.
