We’ll limit the pricing of imported foodstuffs – FG

To reduce Nigeria’s high food costs, the Federal Government has announced that food commodities imported into the country during the next 150 days will be subject to recommended retail prices. This happened on the same day that Senator Ali Ndume, who represents the Borno South senatorial district, claimed that the country’s food crisis was exacerbated by President Bola Tinubu’s refusal to listen to lawmakers and cabinet officials.

Recall that the government recently abolished import levies and taxes on food commodities such as rice and wheat. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, announced this on his X (formerly Twitter) handle yesterday, saying that after suspending duties and taxes on food items, the Federal Government will go a step further by subjecting imported items to what he described as the recommended retail price. He also promised that food prices in the country would fall in the next 180 days and urged Nigerians to be patient with the government.

Labour meets Tinubu today and pushes on the N250,000 minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress has stated that it will press for a minimum salary of N250,000 during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at State House in Abuja on Thursday (today). The NLC’s Head of Public Affairs, Benson Upah, stated that Labour will insist on its N250,000 proposal during the meeting with the President.

“We are going to the table with a demand of N250,000, even though the cost of living has risen. “We’ve been reasonable and patriotic,” Upah informed our correspondent. Labour leaders were called to a meeting with the President as part of Tinubu’s vow to conduct additional talks with stakeholders on the minimum wage.

The upcoming meeting comes about a month after the President said in his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, that an executive measure creating a new national minimum wage would be presented to the National Assembly for approval. On June 25, the Federal Executive Council, chaired by the President, halted deliberation on the new minimum wage memo to allow for greater stakeholder involvement ahead of the proposed executive law.

LG funds: Supreme Court decides FG suit against governments today

The Supreme Court will rule today (Thursday) on the complaint filed by the Federal Government against the 36 state governors of the Federation regarding local government autonomy. The petition, brought by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), seeks full autonomy and direct cash allocation to the country’s 774 local governments.

It is requesting that the Supreme Court issue an order withholding funding from LGs that are managed by governor-appointed caretakers rather than elected chairmen and councillors. However, the 36 states, represented by their solicitors general, rejected the suit on a variety of grounds, including the argument that the Supreme Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

On June 13, a seven-member panel of Supreme Court Justices, led by Justice Garba Lawal, heard the suit and reserved judgment.
While Fagbemi represented the federal government in the SC/CV/343/2024 litigation, the state governors were represented by their respective AGs or lawyers.

All of the states opposed the suit and urged the Supreme Court to dismiss it. The AGF, for its part, requested that the Supreme Court approve all of the reliefs sought by the Federal Government and grant local governments complete autonomy as the third tier of government in Nigeria, as outlined in the 1999 constitution.
