Kwara State Government Urges Residents to Take Flood Alerts Seriously

The Kwara State Government has warned its residents to take the ongoing flood alerts seriously and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. This warning comes after the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) predicted three days of continuous heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms in the state, starting from Tuesday.

According to the state Commissioner for Communication, Bola Olukoju, various government agencies have conducted public enlightenment programs to educate residents on flooding and its impacts. The government has also desilted drainages and water passages within the metropolis and discouraged actions that may worsen the threats of the climate crisis and rising water levels.

“The government has taken proactive measures to mitigate the effects of flooding, but we need the cooperation of our residents to ensure their safety,” Olukoju said. “We appeal to our people to follow this important advisory as the government does its part of supporting them in various ways.”

Residents in flood-prone areas, particularly riverine communities, are advised to relocate to safer zones allocated by the government. The state government works closely with traditional institutions to ensure a smooth relocation process.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also warned residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions, emphasizing the importance of being proactive in mitigating the effects of flooding.

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, has reassured his administration’s commitment to supporting affected residents. The government will continue to lend its voice to calls for the dredging of the River Niger, which is seen as a permanent solution to perennial flooding in the area.

The affected local government areas include Patigi, Edu, Moro, Kaiama, and Ilorin East. Residents in these areas are advised to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their properties.

The state government has also urged residents to report any incidents of flooding or damage to the relevant authorities, promising prompt response and assistance.

As the heavy rains continue, residents are advised to stay informed and follow local news sources for updates on the flood situation in Kwara State. The government’s efforts to mitigate the effects of flooding are ongoing, and cooperation from residents is crucial in ensuring public safety.

In related news, the Federal Government has alerted 11 states, including Kwara, to the potential risks of flooding due to the planned release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

Stay safe and stay informed.
