IPOB Warns Tinubu Government Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Deteriorating Health
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has raised grave concerns about the worsening health condition of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently detained at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters facility in Abuja. IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, stated that Kanu’s health is deteriorating due to neglect by the Nigerian government and the DSS.
In a statement issued on Monday, Powerful accused the Nigerian government, judiciary, DSS operatives, and some Igbo politicians of plotting to eliminate Kanu. He emphasized that Kanu’s detention is illegal, citing the Nigerian Appeal Court’s discharge and acquittal of all charges against him. The Supreme Court also ruled that Kanu did not jump bail and declared his abduction and extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria illegal.
IPOB demands Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release to enable him to receive proper medical care. The group has called on the international community, including the United Nations, Human Rights Council, African Union, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch, to compel the Nigerian government to release Kanu.
According to Powerful, “It has become very obvious that the Nigerian government, the Nigerian judiciary, the DSS operatives, and some Igbo politicians are all together in a plot to eliminate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.” He warned that IPOB will not stand idly by if Kanu’s health continues to deteriorate, stating, “These people should know the consequences of any harm befalling Nnamdi Kanu while in their custody.”
The IPOB spokesperson questioned the rationale behind Kanu’s continued detention despite court orders. “Why keep an innocent man in solitary confinement to suffer for no reason, even after the courts have declared his detention as illegal and an abuse and violation of his fundamental human rights?” he asked.
Kanu’s only crime, Powerful noted, is championing the Biafra self-determination struggle, which complies with the UN convention and African Charter on People’s Right. IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to the Biafran people’s freedom struggle, emphasizing that it is unstoppable.
The Nigerian government has not commented on Kanu’s health status or IPOB’s demands. The situation remains tense, with IPOB warning of harsh consequences if Kanu’s health continues to deteriorate while in custody.
The international community’s intervention is crucial in resolving this situation peacefully. IPOB’s call for Kanu’s release and proper medical care has sparked concerns about human rights violations and the rule of law in Nigeria. As tensions escalate, a swift resolution is necessary to prevent further conflict.
The Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra reiterated its demand for Kanu’s unconditional release, emphasizing that his continued detention is a direct consequence of the Nigerian government and DSS’s neglect. The group urged the Nigerian Judiciary not to collude with the executive branch to violate Kanu’s rights and freedom.
The deteriorating health condition of Nnamdi Kanu has raised concerns among human rights organizations and the international community. The situation highlights the need for Nigeria to uphold human rights and the rule of law, ensuring that Kanu receives proper medical care and is released under court orders.
