The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has contributed Igbo language educational materials to Imo State government.

The material, titled ‘Ka Anyi Guo Igbo’ Early Grade Reading (EGR), and Teacher Learning Materials ( TLM), were presented at the Imo state ministry of education secretariat, Owerri, on Thursday.

The chief of the party Northern Education Initiative Plus (NEIP), Mr Nurudeen Lawal, said the donation was to help Igbo language and the cultural heritage remain in existence.

However, he revealed that USAID was committed to provide developmental materials in Igbo and Yoruba language due to the serious challenges rocking the present generation in the aspect of reading.

Describing the book as a research based work for school children and teachers he added: “When a child is being taught in a language he or she understands best, the child will be able to read well”.

Lawal urged the government of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, to help USAID vision and to safeguard the future of the children.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Bernard Ikegwuruka in his remarks described the book rich in content and in context, assuring the State government, that Igbo language would be made a compulsory course within 2021/2022 academic session. He promised that the listed 303 public schools in the states would get the materials.

The acting chairman of Imo state Universal Basic Education (UBEB), Mrs Stella Ukagba, said the reading materials would go a long way in breaking the aberration in Igbo language extinction.

She commended the governor’s effort to revive and promote the teaching of Igbo language and cultural institutions in the State.

“To fully get the trappings of his project, there should be implementation at the grassroots: that is the primary one to three teachers and the supervisors will need to be trained and re-trained to effectively handle this task,” she said.
